Visit questions

# Start the visit with your health concern.

Start with what you want help with. Leave knowing the plan, the cost, and how to ask for help.

Assessment

The conversation and checks used to understand a health concern before deciding on care.

## Put the health concern first.

Make a note of your health concern, how long it has lasted, and what change you hope to see.

Bring relevant records and a list covering medicines, supplements, and the questions you want to remember.

What else could explain the problem I want to address?

What options can we discuss, including doing nothing for now?

Why this particular medicine and this form?

What benefit would count as enough to continue?

What would lead us to revise the plan or end it?

Pause over words you do not recognise and ask for an explanation before the conversation continues. You can come to the visit without knowing any drug names.

Evidence for this chapter

Washington: care and consent

As of September 30, 2026, remote care must meet the standards for comparable in-person care, including consent.

Consent

Understanding the proposed care and agreeing to it.

## What happens at the visit?

### Does the first visit have to be on video?

As of September 30, 2026, Washington allowed a care relationship to begin through telehealth, meaning care given at a distance. Email, texts, instant messages, or fax alone could not establish it. The assessment still has to meet the standard for comparable in-person care.

### Will I need blood tests or an examination?

Ask what information the clinician needs for the treatment being discussed. National guidance for medical boards says to arrange tests or a visit in person if these are needed for the assessment. That guidance is a model for boards, rather than a law by itself.

### Does paying for a visit mean I will get a prescription?

Treat a prescription as a decision to discuss, rather than something a visit promises. Ask how the visit fee is handled when the clinician decides against prescribing medicine.

### What needs to be clear before I agree?

Ask about the expected benefit, possible harms, other options, and the plan for follow-up. Include current medicines, allergies, and any pregnancy plans in the conversation.

Evidence for this chapter

Washington: remote care requirements

As of September 30, 2026, online care in Washington had to meet the same standards as care given in person.

Medical-board model: tests and in-person checks

Under the model guidance, an assessment that requires tests or a visit in person should have those arranged.

Follow-up

A later discussion to review how the care plan is working.

## Leave with a way to ask the next question.

Before the visit ends, ask who to contact with a concern and how to reach them. Ask who checks your test results and when you will review the plan together.

If medicine is prescribed, request its exact name, the dispensing pharmacy’s name, and written instructions from the care team.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) flags services where no licensed doctor can answer questions after the medicine arrives.
