The words

# What does the name mean?

The first useful detail is the exact product name. “Peptide” is only the beginning of the description.

FDA

The letters FDA in these cards refer to Food and Drug Administration, a US agency responsible for medicine reviews.

## Ask which product is being discussed.

Peptides are short strings of tiny chemical pieces, rather like beads threaded together. Proteins use those chemical pieces too. Insulin is a peptide, for example.

That name alone does not establish whether a product is approved or how well it has been studied.

As checked on September 26, 2026, FDA-approved examples included semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) plus tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound).

FDA approval covers a specific medicine and the uses listed on its label. A similar name does not mean another medicine has that approval.

Ask: “What is the exact drug, which form is it, and what is the aim of treatment?”

The body uses GLP-1 as a signal affecting blood sugar and appetite; some medicines reproduce its effects.

Evidence for this chapter

FDA: semaglutide product label

FDA had approved these example medicines as of September 26, 2026.

FDA: tirzepatide product label

A product label sets out the uses covered by that approval.

Compounding

Making a medicine for an individual order rather than providing a finished product from a factory.

## Made to order does not mean reviewed in advance.

A medicine prepared to order is not FDA-approved, as checked on September 26, 2026.

For a made-to-order medicine, safety, quality, and how well it works go unreviewed by FDA before sale.

Preparing a medicine to order may be lawful when an approved medicine cannot meet the patient’s need.

Ask what makes an approved product unsuitable for your need. Ask who would make the medicine to order.

The September 26, 2026 check found semaglutide and tirzepatide both absent from FDA’s national shortage list.

Once a national shortage ends, pharmacies face limits on regularly making their own versions of the approved medicine now available again. Making a medicine to order for a patient’s specific need may still be allowed.

A pharmacy’s stock problem does not establish that FDA lists a national shortage.

Evidence for this chapter

FDA: the role of compounding

Legal permission to prepare a medicine to order did not give it FDA approval, as checked on September 26, 2026.

FDA: the end of the shortages

As of September 26, 2026, these medicines were off the national shortage list. That limits when pharmacies may make copies.

Research label

A research-only label does not establish that a product is a medicine for patient care.

## Research is not a route around the care questions.

The FDA records reviewed on September 26, 2026 showed no US drug approval for BPC-157, ipamorelin, or retatrutide.

The approval search does not show that BPC-157 or ipamorelin may be made to order.

For retatrutide, FDA states specifically that federal law does not allow its use in compounding, as of September 26, 2026.

Have the pharmacist identify the rule permitting the offered ingredient in that specific form. The name “peptide therapy” does not answer that question.

Evidence for this chapter

FDA: unapproved weight medicines

As of September 26, 2026, these three ingredients had no FDA-approved US medicine. Federal law also barred making retatrutide to order.
